Event Description This course is open to registered childminders, practitioners working in group settings based in Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch and EYFS staff working in schools in the same area. .

Signalong is a sign supporting system which has been developed to help children and adults to acquire language skills and to aid where there are communication difficulties.

Signalong follows the general course of language development and is designed to support and encourage spoken language the spoken word should accompany every sign. The programme for training is arranged in approximate developmental stages, progressing from labelling solid objects to identifying pictures and photographs. It focuses on and supports the understanding of key words and concepts.

The course content includes opportunities to explore concepts such and generalisation and symbolic representation as well as thinking about our individual communication skills.

Signalong's unique methodology will teach you signing skills and equip you to access any sign from the manuals rather than simply teaching a large vocabulary of signs that may not be immediately relevant. Please note that attendance of the first session is essential-if you are unable to attend this you will be asked to defer your place to the next course.
Event Outcomes Course Outcomes:

To enable Early years practitioners to increase their understanding of the value of signing to support the development of communication skills

To increase confidence to use daily in settings with all children as part of a total communication approach

Learning Outcomes:

To understand the purpose and use of sign supported communication.

To use signing skills and some signs to interact and communicate with others.

Tutors will discuss assessment criteria at the first session.
