Event Description **This event is for Adult Social Care BCP Council staff only, see below for more info**

COURSE DATES: This event is for the following 2 half days - Mon 31 Jan (am) & Tue 1 Feb (am). Both half days must be attended to complete this course. Please note that other course dates may follow a different format therefore, if the second half day is not attended on this event the whole course will need to be repeated.

BCP Council Adult Social Care Frontline Staff (who have attended MCA training less than 36 months ago) AND
are responsible for undertaking mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions such as Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Care Managers and Assistant Care Managers.

*The above Staff who have never attended MCA training or have attended MCA training over 36 months ago - These staff need to book on to the Introduction to Mental Capacity Act.
*Best Interest Assessors (BIA) and does not relate to becoming an Approved Mental Capacity Practitioner (AMCP) – further information on this will be communicated following Government guidance.

COURSE AIMS: To enable adult social care staff who are already familiar with the Mental Capacity Act to develop their skills and competencies in completing capacity and best interest assessments that are legally robust.

COURSE DELIVERY: This course will be delivered via Zoom. A Zoom training link email will be sent out to confirmed delegates a few days before the course starts. If confirmed delegates have not received the Zoom/MS Teams training link email before 30 minutes of the advertised start time please contact

* Confirmed delegates need to allow enough time (at least 15 mins) to log on to Zoom to be ready for the course to start promptly at its start time when it will be locked. Due to BCP policy and time limitations - late arrivals will not be able to join the session.
*If a confirmed delegate does not have the necessary IT equipment to participate fully, is late logging on to a session or is unable to participate on the day (please cancel booking on CPD Online), we will ask them to rebook on a future date.

COURSE UPDATE: This course needs to be updated every 3 years 
Event Outcomes Analysis of the assessment process including areas of complexity.
Identify key learning from case law including the latest guidance from judges in the Court of Protection
Develop and critique recording of capacity determinations and best interest decisions.
Awareness of the legal changes from Deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding to Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) and implication for practice.
