Event Description This is an accredited Portage training course delivered by National Portage Association (NPA) accredited trainers. This course will look at a small steps approach to working with children with additional needs and how to embed portage principles into early years practise.

The course is delivered in 6 sessions. There is a gap then a follow up session to support completion of the course and implementation of portage principles in practice. PLEASE CHECK DATES CAREFULLY. ALL dates MUST be attended to achieve the qualification.

This course is suitable for early years practitioners, people hoping for a career in portage and parents receiving portage who want a greater understanding of how to support their child.

OPTIONAL DEVELOPMENT: the Portage Workshop can lead to:

* A BTEC Certificate Level 3 in Portage Skills Attendance on Portage
* Continuing Professional Development training relating to Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties or Behaviour
* Early Years Settings becoming Portage Approved Settings via the NPA Stamp of Approval Scheme

Event Outcomes By the end of the training, participants will:

* Understand the Portage model and how it can support the work of EY settings with children with SEND
* Know the Portage Principles and how they can be used in settings
* Recognise the importance of working in partnership with families
* Understand the value of Portage in relation to national SEN reforms and new initiatives
* Reflect on the need for clear language when planning for children.
* Be clear about the benefits of writing Clear Teaching Targets for children
* Complete an individual assignment demonstrating the ability to write a Clear Teaching Target and task analysis
* Be aware of the range of information needed to set appropriate Long Term Goals
* Reflect on positive holistic assessment of a child's skills
* Show they can break down tasks in a variety of ways to make learning easier
* Plan a sequence of small steps towards a given Long Term Goal from where the child is now (baseline)
* Understand that there are different models for planning, recording and sharing information and in what circumstances these should be used
* Use a model for recording an open ended activity to plan a play activity for a child
* Recognise the essential elements that should be included in an outcome focussed activity plan
* Be aware that children with a range of SEND may need specific support to develop their play skills
* Explore and share ideas to help children develop their play, share play and generalise
* Be aware of ‘age appropriateness' of behaviour
* Be aware of and able to identify the possible messages being communicated through behaviour
* Identify possible reasons for children's behaviour in own setting
* Complete a behaviour plan using skills and strategies learned to promote positive behaviour
